Poetry – Shadows

There’s shadows sat behind your smile
Flickering in your eyes
I’ve always heard them in your voice
Although you rarely cry.

You’ve always stayed a little close
Held me a bit too tight
And at the slightest hint of threat
You’ve been ready to fight.

I know what happened in your life
Back before I was here
I know how much you suffered then
And never shed a tear

There were so many blows that came
You never got a rest
You took them all, you didn’t break
You weathered all the tests.

I’m told you were like sunshine once
Sometimes I see a spark
A brightness dancing in your eyes –
Then swallowed by the dark.

There’s shadows when I look at you
The shadows your life cast
But there’s still sun inside of you
You can still escape your past
